KARACHI: Improper waste disposal and lack of adequate management plan to collect and dump garbage scientifically, has become a serious issue for Pakistan’s biggest city which is Karachi. In Karachi, garbage is thrown in the slums and untreated raw sewage flows through drains. These drains are breeding ground for mosquitoes and other vectors, which cause vector-borne diseases like Chikungunya, dengue fever and malaria and children are the worst victims to these diseases. Most of the slums are located on the edges of these drains. Moosa Colony, in Gulberg Town, is one these slums, which is located on either sides of Gujjar Nullah, a huge size natural drain supposed to carry rainwater but now raw sewage flows through it and passes between the houses. These slum dwellers, including children, inhale raw sewage all the time, and when it rains, their makeshift homes fill with manure.
