ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Friday demanded the US target banned Tehreek-e-Taliban and Mullah Fazlullah in their bases inside Afghanistan. Pakistan’s civil and military leadership had extensive talks with US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Olson, Senior Adviser and Director for South Asian Affairs at the National Security Council Dr Peter Lavoy and US commander in Afghanistan General John Nicholson, who visited Foreign Office and the General Headquarters on Friday. The visiting dignitaries were told that the drone strikes and peace process cannot go side by side and that Pakistan won’t allow Indian spy agency RAW and Afghan intelligence agency NDS to foment terrorism on Pakistani soil. The US delegation first met with Adviser to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz and Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry. According to Foreign Office spokesman, the adviser conveyed a strong message to the US that the May 21 drone strike in Balochistan was not only a violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty and breach of the principles of the UN Charter but has also vitiated the bilateral ties. It was emphasized that any future drone strike in Pakistan will be detrimental to the common desire to strengthen relations. The adviser further said that the drone strike had seriously undermined the Afghan peace and reconciliation process at a time when Pakistan along with other Quadrilateral Coordination Group (QCG) countries was engaged in serious efforts to revive peace talks between Afghan government and the Taliban. In response to US queries on Taliban safe havens, it was emphasized that Pakistan was already pursuing its objective of eliminating all militants and terrorists from its soil in accordance with the national action plan and that Pakistan also expects action by Afghan forces against TTP operatives in Afghanistan. The delegation later visited the GHQ where Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif while expressing his serious concerns on the US drone strike in Balochistan highlighted as to how it had impacted the mutual trust and was counter-productive in consolidating the gains of Operation Zarb-e-Azb. Raising the demand of targeting TTP and Mullah Fazlullah in their bases inside Afghanistan, the COAS reiterated Pakistan’s resolve not to allow hostile intelligence to foment terrorism on Pakistani soil. The COAS reaffirmed the need for continuing harmonized efforts against terrorists and effective border management as ways to regional peace and stability. He said Pakistan was committed to working for a long-term peace process for Afghanistan under the QCG framework. Dr Peter Lavoy, while conveying Barack Obama’s good wishes for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s speedy recovery, said that the US was committed to improving relations with Pakistan as emphasized during prime minister’s last visit to Washington.
