Gohar was a rickshaw driver and he was earning enough to feed his family and keep them happy. He was a diabetes patient for a couple of years due to which doctors had to cut his leg off. A large family was dependant on him and after he lost his leg as he was unable to drive and provide for his family.
“Due to diabetes doctors had to cut my leg and then I wasn’t able to work and earn. I have had a very hard time dealing with all the expenses then one of my relatives paid for my treatment and Dr Khalid Jamil treated me and made me able to walk again with new leg”, Gohar told Daily Times.
Dr Khalid Jamil Akhtar is also known as Big Brother for his tremendous achievements as a student and also as a doctor. He was the topper of his class, was a debater and played as a captain for his college’s football team.
“I topped in Matriculation and then I topped in FSc. I always thought that running faster than everyone else in life’s race is the biggest achievement. I was Pakistan’s best debater and Cadet College Petaro awarded me with ‘Stick of honour’ which is equivalent to ‘Sword of honour,’” Dr Khalid Jamil told Daily Times in an exclusive interview
His life was going perfectly fine until he met a major accident during his third year at King Edward Medical College, Lahore. In that accident, he lost his legs and doctors told him he won’t be able to walk again.
After that he continued his studies and did not let anything lower his courage to help mankind. He did not only made himself able to walk again but also helped several patients in Pakistan and gave them artificial legs to help them stand again from the wheelchair. He is known as the founder of artificial human body parts in Pakistan.
“After my accident, I used to visit doctors but there was no specialist to deal my case in Pakistan. So, after I completed my studies here at Kind Edward Medical College I went to London for specialisation. After specialisation I came back to Pakistan and not only examined the patients but also gave training to doctors in Pakistan.”
“I did not only give proper treatment to the disabled but also arranged source of livelihood for them. I also learned for their rights and increased the allotted quota from government for disabled of one per cent to two per cent,” he added.
For all his work and effort, he has been entitled as ‘Big brother’ by the Government of Punjab while he was awarded ‘Sitara-e-imtiaz’ (star of excellence) by the Government of Pakistan.
He said that he wanted to see his patients happy and satisfied after the recovery that is why he has worked so hard all his life and he has continued to play his part as Big brother for as long as he could.
Just like Gohar the rickshaw driver, he helped hundreds of disabled patients and set their lives at a point where no one could call them of not being able to do something.
