The veteran Kashmiri freedom fighter Ghulam Nabi Fai has pointed out that the UN security council Resolution no 122 reaffirms the affirmation of its resolution 91(1951). He observes that “Gupkar Declaration” or any other such moves do not offer resolution of the disputed territory illegally occupied by India. Autonomy is not the issue. Present situation in Kashmir has made it clear that the autonomy is unjust, untenable and not acceptable to the people of Kashmir. Aazadi the only catch phrase of resistance on the streets does not mean autonomy but right of self – determination. Rights activist Arundhati Roy responding to a question had stated clearly “what do the people of Kashmir want”. “I don’t think they would have been clearer. They have been saying it for seventy years .They have been saying it loudly .They have been saying with their blood since 1990 of course, it is self-determination”. Ghulam Nabi Fai and other Kashmiri veterans believe that Kashmiris had revolted against the status -quo and will never accept status -quo as a settlement .Naively some western capitals perceive the Kashmir as a problem between Srinagar and New Delhi .for 70 plus years they have ignored the united Nations resolutions on Kashmir. There is no substitute for the right of self-determination. In democratic politics arrogance and the feeling of superiority cannot be accommodated. Politicians must be convincing and self – assertive , but also open for discussion and debate ,and even realizing that sometimes they may be wrong .It is more productive and easier to win over opponents if one is pragmatic, factual and build on scientific and other knowledge . Democratic politicians who are modest and humble may actually be more successful in the long run, domestically and internationally , indeed in countries where religion plays a more direct role, Institutions and Organizations must re-evaluate their values and develop such that are neutral and universal . Adequate rains that are usually deemed a blessing for an agrarian economy become disasters, with relief effort needed in Pakistan. The immense losses that the people have suffered due to heavy rain this year must be a case study fro federal and provisional governments. Policy makers and administrators must come together to formulate a strategy against future rains. Unpredictable weather patterns cannot be accounted for, but this is the world we now live in. Preparations in advance are a must for extreme events happening with greater frequency. Every year the officials rely on last minute disaster management. Discouraging ad-hoc solutions is the first step that the authorities must take if damages have to be kept to the minimum. Provisional and federal government have to focus on sustainable urban development practices while keeping the altering environment in view.
