Tips for a cosy and stylish home

Published on: August 13, 2016 8:08 PM

There’s a reason someone thought up the phrase, ‘Home Sweet Home’. Your home is the primary place where you live, eat, learn, love and grow. Not only should your decor reflect your personality and taste, it should present you with a space that is both stylish and comfortable. I am always discovering simple and smart tricks for brightening up my living space with my Amma, and today I’m going to share a few ways to do just that.

Hang your frames – don’t let a blank canvas go to waste! Go ahead and hang your art and photos on the walls for a splash of life and colour. And if you are noticing that your framed pieces are beginning to pile up, try making a wall collage. I adore how my friend Sahar Noon’s living area, has the effect of filling an empty wall with a medley of frames and pieces of her artwork that have special meaning. There’s something lovely about arranging things into a perfectly masterminded yet haphazard cluster. A perfect mess, if you will. I love her classic, neutral colour palette and her personal touches that make her space unique.

Add punchy cushions – one of the easiest ways to instantly update your decor is by investing in a few new accent cushions. Whether your bed is in need of a little boost or the couch could use a makeover, throw cushions have the ability to change the entire look of the room. Opt for a customised one with your initials or favourite picture or a colourful cluster of different shapes and sizes. Chances are the change will leave you feeling inspired and refreshed.

Make your space your own – like I’ve said before, a space that reflects your taste and personality is one that will feel liveable and cosy. Make your space your own by adding unique treasures or pieces that are important to you – whether that means items you have collected while travelling, or vintage finds you’ve discovered at antique stores. Take inspiration from this vintage Umar Khayam carpet that spotlights my stairway – it gives a strong impression of a tasteful decor. Nothing like going on a road trip to Chiniot to get the finest furniture. It’s totally worth it! You can even refurbish an old piece of furniture to put a one-of-a-kind spin on it. Always decorate your home your way – so that it feels like you!
