BKU fails to open due to teaching assistants’ protest

Published on: September 5, 2016 10:52 PM

PESHAWAR: Bacha Khan University (BKU), Charsadda management failed to open the varsity for students even after summer vacations as scores of Teacher Assistants (TA) have been continuing their protest for regularization for the last five days.

Around 50 Teacher Assistant (TA) of the university staged protest demonstration on its fifth consecutive day in favour of their demands for up-gradation and service structure regularisation.

Bacha Khan University Teacher Association (BUTA) President Dr Shakeel lamented that most of the teaching faculty consisted of TA staff and they have been waiting for the last three years to get regularised.

Dr Shahkeel said that university has hold eight syndicate meetings but failed to resolve the issue. The non-seriousness attitude of the varsity administration towards its own teaching faculty has maligned its reputation in students’ circle of the province.

The standing committee of the National Assembly has approved one step up gradation of the TA staff of KP universities one year before. But, BKU Registrar and Vice Chancellor are making lame excuses to implement NA recommendations in the university.

It is on the merit to mention here that the Abdul Wali Khan University of Mardan (AWKM) had already implemented the standing committee recommendations regarding the TA regularization and up gradation.

The BKU was virtually run by the TA staff as the university has very limited teaching faculty members.

According the notification issued by the university the date of the summer vacations has been extended owning to TA staff went on strike and it become impossible for the rest of the teaching faculty to teach the classes and bear the workload of teaching without TA.

“The study of the students has largely affected owning to continues protest of the TA staff which almost covering the whole classes teaching schedule and other research work in the university.

The official of the university on the request of anonymity told this scribe that the registrar and vice chancellor of the varsity unwilling to upgrade the TA staff and regularize their service structure pending since 2009.

He accused the high officials of the university intended to get rid of the TA staff and fill the positions with their blue eyed.

He said that the teaching environment has relatively at the verge of collapse because of the limited teaching faculty and other issues such as non regularization TA staffs and on and off protest.

According to the data available with Daily Times most of the TA staff of the university holding Ph Ds, M Phls and MS degrees from well recognized universities of the world. But the university has no respect for them and all of them are being treated like labourer and layman and they were forced to come on the roads for the rightful demands for several days.

However, despite several attempts to contact the VC of the Bacha Khan University, Fazal e Raheem Marwat, was not available to comment on the issue.
