ISLAMABAD: The Cabinet Committee of the National Assembly has sought a detailed report on smuggling of heroin in the national flag carrier. The body ordered the PIA administration to submit the reasons to cancel important routes and reallocate them to other airlines, sources told Daily Times. A two-day meeting of the Committee on Cabinet Secretariat would be held on September 21 and 22 in PIA headquarters Karachi. The meeting will be headed by Rana Muhammad Hayat Khan. The body would take up the inquiry report regarding the seizure of 28 kg heroin from PIA flights in June and July from Karachi and Lahore airports. An inquiry committee comprising of customs, Airport Security Force and Anti-Narcotics Force officials was tasked to hold accountable real culprits instead of making low-grade employees a scapegoat. The cabinet committee gave a two-month time to the inquiry committee in this regard. The cabinet committee would make a decision in the light of the report, sources added. The cabinet committee will also discuss the domestic and international routes cancelled by the PIA admin and then allocated to other airlines. The committee members will inspect the PIA kitchen as they have received complaints from passengers in this regard. The body will take up the Air Transportation Safety Bill that was moved by PPP lawmaker Nafeesa Shah. The Civil Aviation Authority officials will present their viewpoint on the bill.
