SUKKUR: SSP Motorway police Sukkur Ghulam Sarwar Bhayo on the strict directions of IG NH&MP Shokar Hayat and DIG Nasir Mehmood Satti had cracked down on transporters that have loaded their vehicle passengers exceeding their capacity and increasing fares in light of the Eid-ul-Fitr rush when residents of the port city head to their hometowns to spend the holidays. In an operation at various points including Baberloi toll plaza, motorway officials took action against 70 buses and 20 vans, giving back the Rs 58,000 extra fare charged by the transporters back to the commuters. Bus drivers found overcharging customers against the established transport rates were fined between Rs 55,000 by the police. Meanwhile in the south range, the motorway police have formed various squads to deal with overpricing by transporters ahead of Eid, said officials. Each year before and after Eid, transporters start charging more than the usual as demand for travelling increases since most people travel to their native towns and villages to spend the festival with loved ones.
