PESHAWAR: Legislators of the provincial assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and district assemblies urged the government to provide basic health facilities in all Basic Health Units (BHUs) and Rural Health Centre (RHCs) across the province to secure the life of mother and child in the province. An orientation session with Local Government representatives with the support of Empowerment, Voice & Accountability for Better Health Nutrition Pakistan (EVA-BHN) organized by Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) in a local hotel on Monday. On the occasion Muazzam Khan from SPDI said that aim of the SPDI is to unite the district members and constitute a committee in which all the district member will participate that they can highlight all the issues facing in their areas regarding health in Basic Health Units and RHCs. He further said that unfortunately Pakistan not meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) regarding the Mother and Child Health-care, adding that SPDI working with sixty six thousand think tankers and get 19 numbers in making policy which reflect the performance of Sustainable Development Policy Institute. “We are working in four districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including Peshawar, Mardan, Nowshera and Swabi and will work with local representative of the area about the health issues and their solution on local as well as those issues will be further discussed with the provincial assemblies”, the Sustainable Development Policy Institute official said. Sajid Khan from EVA-BHN while giving his presentation said that EVA-BHN working in four districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Basic Health Units and RHCs and working with local volunteers who were highlight the issues being facing by them in their health facilities. He informed the audience that according to the Multiple Cluster Survey held in 2008 there were Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) is 276 mother died in 100,000 while the ratio of Neonatal Health Care is more alarming in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He further said that in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa there were around 60% home delivery were conducted by untrained people while around 21% deliveries of child birth in private clinics, adding that only 16% deliveries were did in government facilities. Mehreen Kamran district member of Union Council-30 from Awami National Party said that the PTI Government when came to power they claimed to change the health system but today the PTI own elected members were saying that there were no health facilities in their areas to the people. Asma Sadaqat from PK-9 said that in her area there is a basic health unit building exists but there were no facilities for the patients as there were no doctors, no boundary wall and no medicine available for the patients. Zubair Voice & Accountability Manager said that Pakistan is fourth number in Globe having high risk for mother and child health, adding that because of the People Primary Health Initiative (PPHI) project was not extended as there were no medicines and other facilities were available in Basic Health Units and RHCs in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Naib Nazim Peshawar Syed Qasim Ali Shah said that they will soon constitute a committee in which all district members including non-government organization to highlight all the issues regarding health. He further said and admitted the government were not achieved all the goals regarding to improve the health sector , adding that all these issues cannot be achieved in one day but it will take more time. On the occasion National Assembly member Tahira Bukhari, Provincial assembly member Rifat Rashida, district Peshawar member Rabia Basri and other councilors including male and female were spoke.
