The Radio Pakistan reported that during the Indian elections the lowest voter turnout was recorded in India-occupied Kashmir (IoK). The turnout was less than 3 percent during the final phase of India elections in Shopian and Pulwama districts.
“The twin districts recorded a voter turnout of 2.87 percent with 300 out of 695 polling booths empty of voters,” said the Chief Electoral Officer Shailendra Kumar.
Some other sources claimed that the real turnout was even less than the official quote.
It was stated by a Srinagar-based English daily that the polling booths were deserted and the staff was not present. This was recorded as the lowest turnout in the final phase of the Indian elections.
The low turnout was a sign of alienation and protest by the Kashmiris against the state-authorised barbarity in the occupied valley.
