Firdous slams PML-N for naming a ‘convict’ its VP

Published on: May 6, 2019 12:32 AM

Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan on Sunday said that the naming of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Maryam Nawaz as the vice president of the party was in violation of law, as a convict could not hold a party office.

Talking to newsmen in Lahore after ground breaking of first phase of Naya Pakistan Housing Project in Renala Khurd, she said Pakistan and corruption could not go together. She said Prime Minister Imran Khan wanted to uplift the oppressed segments of society, and urged the opposition to play a positive role in this regard in parliament.

Regarding the recent increase in the prices of petroleum products, Firdous said that prices were changed following their hike in the international market.

On May 3, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) approved an increase in the prices of petroleum products by as much as Rs 9 per litre for the month of May.

After the increase, the price of petrol stands at Rs 108 per litre. The meeting also approved the proposed increase in diesel price by Rs 4.89 per litre, light diesel by Rs 6.40 per litre and kerosene by Rs 7.46 per litre.

Meanwhile, talking to the state-run news channel, Firdous hailed the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led government’s policies and said Prime Minister Imran Khan’s vision to transform the country into a Madina-like welfare state could be reflected in all his initiatives.

She said that construction of the Al-Qadir University at Sohawa and the education system that would be introduced at the university also reflected the premier’s vision.

She said Imran Khan laid the foundation stone of the Al-Qadir University at Sohawa with the objective to impart teachings of the Sufi school of thought to instil peace and harmony among the Muslim youths. She said the university would play a key role for the progress and development of ‘Naya Pakistan’, adding it would create a culture of harmony and tolerance in the country. She said research in science and technology also remained a special feature in Islamic history, and it was time to connect the youth to this treasure.
