To commemorate Labour Day, Senate Chairman Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani, on Wednesday, expressed hope for Pakistan to soon experience progress in the standard of living of the labour class.
In his special message, Sanjrani called for a mechanism to consistently and regularly increase the minimum wages of skilled and unskilled labourers to add to the lives in view of the soaring inflation rates.
Senate Chairman observed that Labour Day was an international holiday honouring the struggles of the working class and the efforts of labour unions.
There were said to be a number of issues needed to be addressed.
He resolved to provide for a decent life worth living for the labourers.
The chairman noted that providing a one-day holiday was not an apt tribute to our labourers. Yet, he called it an attempt to reaffirm our commitment and resolve for progress in our country.
“We need to take steps, which will increase productivity,” Sanjrani maintained.
This would only happen when we attempt to increase the satisfaction level of the workers, he added, through a substantial pay structure; workplace safety and a promise of a good life.
Pakistan does not pay heed to labour struggle and issues.
The country was a signatory to conventions by International Labour Organisations, which requires fulfilment of its obligations.
We can and must do something to reduce the plight of labourers.
