WPC Chairman asks Punjab legislators to speak in Punjabi, not poor English, Urdu

Published on: April 6, 2019 3:20 AM

Celebrated writer and World Punjabi Congress (WPC) Chairman, Fakhar Zaman, on Friday, appreciated the opening of Urdu University in Hyderabad.

However, he also urged the government to establish Universities of all National languages across the provinces.

He laid special emphasis on Punjab and said that it had been devoid of its language, which had not received the rightful place.

He exhorted that a first-ever Punjabi University should be established in Lahore while claiming that the prime minister should have mentioned the poor state of Punjabi language in Punjab.

He urged the government to declare Punjabi as the medium of instruction at primary level as well as the language of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab.

Zaman also spoke about the World Punjabi Congress on the occasion and noted that it had held more than 24 international languages conferences to popularize the language internationally.

Yet, he said that no attention had been given in this regard by neither Punjab nor the federal government. The eminent writer added that the constitution authorised the provincial government to give the Punjabi language the status it deserved but unfortunately, the bureaucracy, politicians and the elite class had always stood as opposition.

He recalled being told by Prime Minister Imran Khan, who belongs to Punjab himself, that he would do anything for Punjabi language and culture.

Zaman claimed that now was the proper time for the premier to prove the promise he had made several years ago as he held the authority to direct the provincial government to establish a Punjabi University in Lahore as well as declaring the Punjabi language essential at the primary level. PM Khan was also urged to direct members of the Punjab assembly to communicate in Punjabi, not in poor Urdu or incorrect English.
