MELBOURNE: Matthew Wade was confirmed as Australia’s 24th one-day international captain for the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy; a three-match series against New Zealand after smith picked up an injury on Friday. The wicketkeeper batsman was picked by the National Selection Panel and authorized by Cricket Australia’s Board of Directors to lead the side with both Steve Smith and David Warner ruled out of the Qantas Tour of New Zealand. Smith was ruled out of the three-game Chappell Hadlee Trophy ODI Series that begins in Auckland next week after sustaining a minor sprain to the medial ligament in his left ankle. Warner has been rested from the ODI tour ahead of next month’s four-Test series in India. Smith’s injury also saw 21-year-old Queensland and Brisbane Heat starlet Sam Heazlett added to the lineup. CA’s Interim National Selector Trevor Hohns said a recall for the rested Warner had been considered but Wade was the ‘logical’ option because of his presence in the dressing room. “We had a few options as captain in the absence of Steve Smith and Vice-captain David Warner but Matthew Wade was the logical option given his leadership experience with Australian league club Victoria and the fact he is a vocal leader in the group already,” Hohns said. We discussed the situation with David but after the selection panel made the decision,it was in the best of interest that warner rests and regains fitness for the upcoming Test series in India while Wade handles this new challenge.
