Sidra Yasmin

Choose lesser of the two evils

As the country heads towards general elections, everyone including me is worried about who to choose as a leader. Everyone is seemed confused and this is not something unusual because with every passing day, we are witnessing new scandals of our politicians and this adverse situation is making us more doubtful about which side we should take. We cannot follow any leader blindly; we have to make a wise decision by analyzing the prevailing situation. If a man of knowledge and ignorant cannot be same, then how on the face of this earth our literate community is not understanding the importance and power of their vote and not putting any effort for making a right decision?

Since, it is going to be my first ever chance to cast a vote and I want to decide wisely to whom should I vote. I am more confused than ever and can’t determine who the correct candidate for my vote is. It is the matter of choosing a leader for my beloved country and I can’t take it light. But it is not an easy decision to make because when I look towards all possible options that I have, it occurs to me that no one out of all candidates actually deserves to be my leader. They all lack not only few but many qualities of being a good leader. Despite that I must have to vote for one of them because casting a vote is inevitable as I don’t want to waste my voting right, too.

So, the question is if I have to choose one out of the bunch of the people who don’t even deserve it, who should I choose? Who am I going to trust for my future and for my future generations? Who is able to take this responsibility? Who is one the that can perform his duty better than others? Answering any of these questions is not easy as it is like making a choice among evils. Yes, they are evil in one way or the other they all are evils. And I have to make my choice among a bunch of evil people. It is wise to avoid evils but when it comes to choose a leader by casting a vote, it is unavoidable for all of us. So here the point is that as we are out of options, either we are going to vote for one of these undeserving people or we are not going to vote at all, and later is quite not a wise choice.

There is a principle “lesser of two evils”, and according to this principle whenever we have to choose among two evils we should go for the lesser one. This is in case where both the evils cannot be prevented. And sadly, it is the situation we are facing these days, we cannot prevent these evils but we can make it sure that we are choosing the lesser harmful one.

This principle is not the ultimate solution as constantly choosing lesser of the two evils is like still choosing an evil but we are hoping that a time will come when this principle will no longer be applicable on us and we will proudly choose the right over wrong. But for now, it is requested to do your own research, take out some time from your busy routine and think about it. Do not follow trends, just make it sure that you are making a right choice not just for you but for your future generation too. Take it more serious than ever, make a wise choice and select a person who will humiliate you less on your decision in future.

May Allah (SWT) guide us and protect us from tyrant rulers.
