LAHORE: Punjab Provincial Election Commissioner (PEC) Sharifullah on Friday said that the Election Commission of Punjab has established display centres for the purpose of voter registration, correction or removal of name from the lists. Speaking to the media, Sharifullah said that 2018 is the year of the general elections and the ECP is obliged to fulfill several responsibilities. He said that the EC in Punjab will establish display centres in the province which will function until April 24 and that this is the final opportunity for the public to make corrections and registrations. “The success of the general elections 2018 depends upon the updated voter list and public participation,” Sharifullah added. Sharifullah confirmed that the updated voter list would be issued after April 30th, while he also said that for the purpose of free and fair elections, the services of the lower judiciary or the bureaucracy will be hired. Earlier today, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) requested the lower judiciary to hold general elections 2018 under its supervision. According to ECP Spokesperson, the commission has dispatched letters to registrars of high courts to provide the list of session, additional, additional session and civil judges. It was further said that the judicial officers will be appointed as returning officers (RO) and district returning officers (DROs) for the purpose of supervision during the general elections 2018. The letters have been dispatched according to the Election Act 2017 Section 50 and 51, according to which ECP can hire services of lower judiciary, bureaucrats and its own staff as district DROs and the ROs for polls duties.
