
NEW DELHI: A hard-line Hindu activist was arrested on Friday by the Indian Police over his involvement in the murder of a journalist last year.
According to a senior police officer, the accused K.T. Naveen Kumar was arrested on the suspicion that he was involved in supplying the weapons that were used to kill the journalist Gauri Lankesh. More arrests are expected, the policeman added.
The journalist’s death took place outside her residence,in the southern city of Bengaluru in September. The murder of Gauri Lankesh gave rise to protests across India.
Kumar was a member of hard-line Hindu group ‘Sanatan Sanstha’. The group was earlier accused for the murder of an atheist, but none of the officials of this group were readily available for comments.
The group started becoming prominent since Narendra Modi became Prime Minister in 2014.
The slain Gauri Lankesh was the editor and publisher of the Kannada-language newspaper Gauri Lankesh Patrike.
