KARACHI: Manghopir police on Wednesday claimed to have arrested a man who attacked his aunt and her husband in the name of honour. The aunt sustained injuries while her husband died of bullet wounds inflicted in the attack. She remains under treatment at a hospital. Police said the woman and her husband had eloped and tied a knot about 14 months ago in Quetta. “Their families were opposed to the marriage so they fled Quetta and settled in the outskirts of Karachi without informing their families back home,” said Behzad Khan, brother of the deceased, in his complaint to the police. Police said that Raza Khan* and Shaza were settled at a rented accommodation in Wandi Sharif Goth area in Manghopir police precinct. On Tuesday night, the suspect Abdul Wali, Shaza’s nephew, a resident of Sohrab Goth along with some of his accomplices, attacked the couple. Raza Khan was killed in the incident while Shaza suffered serious wounds and was admitted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where she remains under treatment. Investigators said the suspect had admitted to the crime during preliminary interrogation. “I was looking for them ever since they went into hiding. Finally, I found their location. After finding their location, I along with a friend went to their home and opened fire at them. Raza Khan was killed on the spot,” the suspect was quoted as saying by investigators. They said the suspect’s gun did not work as he aimed it at his aunt. Then, he started beating her with sticks. He also attacked her with a knife as she offered resistance. He left their place assured that his aunt was also dead. Later, the suspect rushed to a private hospital in Gulshan-e-Maymar area for medical treatment for minor injuries. At the hospital, he told doctors that he had sustained injuries on offering resistance in a robbery bid. A police team arrested the suspect from the hospital while he was under treatment. “We brought him to the station and started questioning him and found him suspicious. He was unable to satisfy interrogators,” said Manghopir SHO Haji Sanaullah. The SHO said that the suspect subsequently admitted to the crime. An FIR was later registered against him on a complaint lodged by the brother of the deceased. At least five of his accomplices who assisted him in the crime have been mentioned by names in the FIR. One of them has been arrested while raids are underway to track down the rest. *Names have been changed to protect the identity of the injured woman Published in Daily Times, February 15th 2018.
