An Indian woman has accused her husband of stealing one of her kidneys and selling it after her family failed to pay dowry. 28-year-old Rita Sarkar claimed that her husband arranged appendicitis surgery two years ago, and had the kidney removed during the operation. According to the victim, she knew nothing of her husband’s crime until later examination revealed that her right kidney was missing. Rita told the local media that she had been the victim of domestic abuse over the dowry issue for many years. She said her husband tortured her repeatedly because her family failed to meet his demand for 2 lakh Bengali Rupees in dowry. She has been married for 12 years. Her husband and her brother-in-law have been arrested by the police following her complaint. They have been charged with commercial dealings in human organs. The payment of dowries, traditionally paid by a bride’s family, has been banned in India since 1961. however, the heinous crimes against women are still rampant in society.
