Heavy monsoon rains persist as PMD warns of flooding risks

Published on: July 24, 2026 1:20 PM

A strong monsoon spell continued across Punjab on Friday as widespread rainfall brought relief from intense heat and humidity. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecast intermittent rain and thunderstorms throughout the day in several parts of the country. At the same time, it warned that heavy downpours in some areas could trigger urban flooding, flash floods, and landslides.

In Lahore, the weather remained cool after continuous showers, with the current temperature recorded at 28 degrees Celsius and humidity reaching 83 percent. The PMD said temperatures during the next 24 hours are expected to range between 27 and 32 degrees Celsius. Officials added that monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, along with a westerly weather system, are driving the ongoing rainfall across the upper and central regions.

Furthermore, the department predicted rain with thunderstorms in Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northeastern Balochistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Cities including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Narowal, Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Murree, Jhelum, Attock, and Chakwal are expected to receive intermittent showers. Several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are also likely to experience heavy rainfall during the day.

Rain is also expected to continue in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, while scattered showers may occur in Quetta, Ziarat, Zhob, Musa Khel, Barkhan, and nearby areas of northeastern Balochistan. Meanwhile, upper and southeastern parts of Sindh could receive rainfall at isolated locations, although hot and humid conditions are expected to persist across most of the province.

The PMD warned that intense rainfall may cause urban flooding in low-lying areas, flash floods in seasonal streams, and landslides in mountainous regions. Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Authority and Provincial Disaster Management Authorities have directed local administrations to remain on high alert and respond quickly to emergencies. Citizens, especially tourists and people travelling to hilly areas, have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather and closely follow official advisories.
