Sam Neill’s cause of death confirmed by longtime agent

Published on: July 16, 2026 7:52 PM

The cause of death of acclaimed actor Sam Neill has been confirmed as pneumonia, providing clarity after his family earlier announced his passing without revealing further medical details. Neill died in Australia on Monday at the age of 78, while his family confirmed he was cancer-free at the time of his death.

According to his longtime agent, Philip Grenz, Neill developed pneumonia after successfully overcoming stage-three non-Hodgkin lymphoma through CAR-T therapy. The actor had publicly shared his cancer journey in his 2023 memoir and later revealed that genetic treatment had left him free of the disease earlier this year.

Neill’s family plans to hold a private memorial service in New Zealand in accordance with his wishes. His agent said the actor valued his privacy, and the ceremony will take place at his farm, where family and close friends will gather to honour his life away from the public spotlight.

Born in Northern Ireland in 1947, Neill moved to New Zealand during childhood and began his acting career in the early 1970s. He achieved worldwide recognition in 1993 after starring as Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park, a role that established him as one of Hollywood’s most respected actors and led to decades of international success.

Beyond acting, Neill owned vineyards in New Zealand’s Central Otago region and remained active in film until the final year of his life, completing four projects that are expected to be released in the coming months. Following his death, heartfelt tributes poured in from director Steven Spielberg, co-stars Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, colleagues, neighbours, and fans around the world.
