Veteran New Zealand actor Sam Neill, best known for playing Dr Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park films, died suddenly in Sydney on July 13 at the age of 78. His family said he passed away peacefully while surrounded by loved ones and described his death as unexpected. They did not disclose the cause of death but confirmed he had remained cancer-free following recent treatment.

The family shared a heartfelt message through Neill’s official social media account, saying he passed away with the same dignity and grace that defined his life. Earlier this year, Neill revealed that medical scans showed no signs of cancer after treatment for stage-three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare blood cancer. Meanwhile, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid tribute to the acclaimed actor, praising his humour, kindness and remarkable contribution to Australian and international film. He said Neill faced illness with courage and would remain in the hearts of audiences for generations.

Born Nigel John Dermot Neill in Northern Ireland in 1947, he moved to New Zealand with his family during childhood and later adopted the name Sam while attending school. Although he initially studied law, he discovered his passion for acting through university theatre before joining Wellington’s Downstage Theatre, where he began his professional career and steadily built his reputation.
Neill achieved his breakthrough in the 1977 film Sleeping Dogs, which introduced him to international audiences and opened the door to a distinguished acting career. He later starred in acclaimed productions including My Brilliant Career, Dead Calm, The Hunt for Red October, Omen III: The Final Conflict and Jurassic Park. His ability to excel in drama, thriller and adventure films established him as one of the most respected and versatile actors of his generation.
