Pakistan becomes founding member of WAICO

Pakistan has become a founding member of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO), marking a significant step in expanding international cooperation on artificial intelligence. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar signed the founding agreement during the organisation’s inaugural ceremony in Shanghai. The move reflects Pakistan’s growing focus on AI, digital innovation, and emerging technologies.

Ishaq Dar arrived in China on a two-day official visit at the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. According to the Foreign Office, he signed the WAICO agreement on behalf of Pakistan during the inaugural ceremony. The signing officially made Pakistan one of the organisation’s founding members.

Dar is also scheduled to attend the High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance on July 17. He is expected to present Pakistan’s perspective on strengthening international collaboration in artificial intelligence. The discussions will focus on global AI governance and responsible technological development.

On the sidelines of the conference, the deputy prime minister will hold bilateral talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The two sides are expected to discuss bilateral relations and issues of mutual interest. Dar will also meet senior officials from participating countries to explore cooperation in AI, innovation, and digital transformation.

The Foreign Office said the visit demonstrates Pakistan’s commitment to promoting international cooperation in emerging technologies. Officials believe the initiative will strengthen Pakistan’s strategic partnership with China while creating new opportunities for technological collaboration. The government views AI as an important driver of future economic growth and innovation.
