Faisal Qureshi explains Netflix gap for Pakistani content

Published on: July 14, 2026 11:26 AM

Veteran Pakistani actor Faisal Qureshi has shared his views on why Pakistani films and television productions have yet to secure a significant presence on Netflix, pointing to a combination of regional competition, content limitations and market challenges.

Speaking during a recent podcast, Qureshi responded to a question about when Pakistani content might become available on the global streaming platform. He claimed that influential circles in India are not in favour of Pakistani productions gaining space on Netflix, adding that regional market dynamics play a role in content distribution.

The actor also suggested that another challenge lies in the type of stories streaming platforms seek. According to Qureshi, Netflix often encourages creators to present authentic and realistic narratives that explore both the strengths and shortcomings of their societies. He argued that filmmakers in Pakistan face difficulties in portraying certain sensitive issues, making it harder to produce the kind of content that aligns with the platform’s preferences.

In addition to creative constraints, Qureshi highlighted Pakistan’s streaming habits as another obstacle. He noted that many viewers do not maintain their own Netflix subscriptions and instead rely on shared accounts with friends or relatives living abroad. As a result, he believes the platform generates relatively limited revenue from Pakistan compared with larger neighbouring markets.

According to the actor, the stronger commercial value of the Indian market gives it greater influence within the global streaming industry. He added that audience behaviour in Pakistan also reflects the challenge, saying many viewers are more interested in knowing when new films will become available on YouTube rather than subscribing to paid streaming services.

Qureshi’s comments come amid renewed discussion about the international reach of Pakistani entertainment. Recently, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal announced that the government is holding talks with Netflix and other global streaming platforms to increase the visibility of Pakistani productions while also working on developing a homegrown streaming platform to showcase local films and television dramas worldwide.
