US envoy Tom Barrack arrived in Baghdad on Monday to begin a series of meetings with Iraqi and Kurdish officials. The visit is significant as it signals renewed US engagement with Iraq’s new government. Political leaders, security actors, and regional stakeholders are directly affected by the talks.
Barrack is expected to meet Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi to discuss strengthening bilateral relations. Moreover, he will convey President Donald Trump’s support for the Iraqi government. The discussions are aimed at building a “mutually beneficial” partnership between Washington and Baghdad.
In addition, the US envoy will travel to Erbil for meetings with Kurdish leaders on Tuesday. He is also scheduled to meet President Masoud Barzani and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani. These engagements highlight Washington’s continued ties with Iraq’s Kurdistan Region.
Furthermore, reports suggest the US will press Iraq to disarm Iran-backed militias operating in the country. Some armed groups have already announced steps to distance themselves from the Popular Mobilization Forces. As a result, the security landscape in Iraq is undergoing gradual restructuring.
Meanwhile, the visit comes shortly after Barrack’s appointment as Special Presidential Envoy to Iraq and Syria. Officials say Washington aims to reset its strategic approach in Iraq amid regional tensions. The outcome of the meetings could shape future US-Iraq security and political cooperation.
