Shreyas Iyer replaces Suryakumar Yadav as India's new T20 captain

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made a major leadership change in its T20 setup, removing Suryakumar Yadav from the role of captain and appointing Shreyas Iyer as the new skipper of India’s T20 international team.

The decision was announced as part of the selection committee’s latest meeting, during which squads were also finalized for India’s upcoming tours of Ireland and England, as well as for the Asian Games. The move marks a significant shift in India’s short-format leadership structure ahead of a busy international calendar.

Suryakumar Yadav, who had been leading the side in the T20 format, has been relieved of captaincy duties. Officials did not immediately provide detailed reasons for the change, but sources indicated that the board is looking to build a more stable long-term leadership group for upcoming global tournaments.

Shreyas Iyer, who has previously captained India in limited-overs cricket and led franchises in domestic T20 leagues, has now been entrusted with full-time responsibility in the shortest format. His appointment is seen as part of a broader restructuring effort aimed at preparing a consistent squad core for future ICC events.

The selection committee also announced the squads for the Ireland and England tours, along with the Asian Games squad, highlighting a mix of experienced players and emerging talent. The board emphasized workload management and player rotation as key factors behind the selections.

Cricket analysts say the decision reflects India’s ongoing experimentation with leadership roles in white-ball cricket as the team seeks to balance performance, fitness, and long-term planning.

Fans have reacted strongly on social media, with debates emerging over the sudden change in captaincy and its timing so close to major international fixtures. Further clarity is expected from the board in an upcoming press briefing.
