Pakistan has reiterated at the United Nations that a just settlement of the Kashmir dispute remains essential for lasting peace and stability in South Asia. The statement is significant because it underscores Islamabad’s position on a decades-old issue that remains on the UN Security Council’s agenda. The remarks affect regional diplomacy and ongoing international discussions on unresolved conflicts.
Addressing the UN General Assembly, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, said the latest Security Council annual report highlighted both the Jammu and Kashmir dispute and the Palestine issue. He noted that more than 20 communications regarding the India-Pakistan question were brought before the Security Council during 2025. He also pointed out that the Council held closed consultations on the matter in May last year.

The Pakistani envoy said the continued inclusion of Kashmir on the Security Council’s agenda demonstrated its unresolved international status. He stressed that durable peace in South Asia requires a settlement in line with relevant UN resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. He added that the people of Kashmir should be allowed to exercise their right to self-determination under internationally recognized principles.
By refusing to implement Security Council resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir, India continues to disregard its obligations under the UN Charter, including Article 25, which requires Member States to accept and carry out the decisions of the Security Council.

The remarks prompted a response from India’s UN envoy, Parvathaneni Harish, who maintained that Kashmir is an integral part of India. In reply, Pakistani diplomat Gul Qaiser Sarwani said Jammu and Kashmir remains an internationally recognized dispute before the Security Council. He argued that no political statement could alter the legal and historical status of the issue under international forums.

Pakistan’s representatives also highlighted the situation in Palestine, urging full implementation of the Security Council’s Gaza peace resolution and reaffirming support for Palestinian self-determination. The diplomats further called for broader UN reforms, including a more representative Security Council. They argued that reforms should serve the interests of all member states rather than expanding privileges for a limited number of countries.
