NDMA warns of landslides and hailstorms across northern regions

Published on: June 4, 2026 6:23 PM

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a weather alert for the next 12 to 24 hours, warning of rain, thunderstorms and hailstorms in several parts of Pakistan. Islamabad, multiple districts of Punjab and various areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are expected to experience unstable weather conditions that could affect daily activities and transportation.

Meanwhile, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir are also likely to receive rain and thunderstorms, raising concerns about weather-related disruptions in mountainous regions. The NDMA cautioned that strong winds and hailstorms could damage weak buildings, temporary structures and other vulnerable installations across affected areas.

In addition, the authority warned of possible glacial lake outburst floods and landslides in northern regions where persistent rainfall may increase risks. Officials identified Hunza, Nagar, Gilgit, Chilas and Astore among the areas facing a high threat of landslides that could endanger local communities and travelers.

The alert further highlighted severe landslide risks in Shigar, Chitral, Kalam, Upper Kohistan and several parts of Azad Kashmir. Authorities have also classified routes linking Shimshal Valley, Attabad Lake and Karimabad, as well as roads connecting Gulmit, Shishkat Bala and Passu, as highly sensitive locations.

Furthermore, key transport corridors including Shigar Road, Skardu Road, Deosai Road and the Karakoram Highway may face blockages due to falling rocks and debris. The NDMA also warned that travel disruptions could occur on the Karakoram Highway, Naran Road and the Jaglot-Skardu Road if weather conditions worsen.

Travel activities in Kalam, Kundol, Arang Kel, Dasu, Patan and Chitral Valley may also be affected during the forecast period. Therefore, the NDMA has directed all relevant institutions to remain on high alert, monitor vulnerable areas closely and ensure timely responses on sensitive highways and mountainous routes.
