360,000 tonnes of animal waste disposed of across Punjab

Published on: May 31, 2026 4:23 AM

Punjab Minister for Information and Culture Azma Bokhari has said that the province-wide Eid sanitation operation, carried out under the directives and continuous supervision of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, has concluded successfully.

Azma Bokhari stated that under the Suthra Punjab Program, a total of 360,000 tons of sacrificial animal waste and other refuse was collected and safely disposed of during the three days of Eidul Adha. More than 184,000 sanitation workers and 60,000 vehicles participated in the large-scale operation, ensuring uninterrupted cleanliness services across both urban and rural areas of the province.

She said that waste collection vehicles collectively traveled over 6 million kilometers, while sanitation activities continued without interruption in every district of Punjab-from Lahore to Attock and from Multan to Rahim Yar Khan and Sadiqabad.

The Information Minister added that extensive use of rose water, phenyl, and lime was made to protect citizens from foul odors and environmental pollution. Nearly 4,000 roads across the province were washed with rose water, further enhancing sanitation standards.

Azma Bokhari further stated that Suthra Punjab teams ensured the cleanliness of 60,000 mosques, imambargahs, and Eidgahs, while the Suthra Punjab Helpline successfully resolved 100 percent of the complaints received from citizens in a timely manner.

She noted that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, while appreciating the outstanding performance of Suthra Punjab workers, announced a cash reward of Rs. 10,000 each for those who rendered exceptional services during the operation.

Separately, Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, while addressing a press conference at the Suthra Punjab Authority, stated that under the leadership of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, a historic and unprecedented cleanliness operation was successfully carried out across the province during Eid-ul-Adha 2026. She said that the sanitation heroes of Suthra Punjab Authority worked tirelessly for 72 consecutive hours in extreme temperatures of up to 45°C, ensuring a clean, healthy, and pleasant environment for the public.

She remarked that following the Chief Minister’s recent surgery, while she was recovering, her first inquiry was about the progress of the cleanliness operation, reflecting her deep commitment to public service and this flagship initiative. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has appreciated all officers, commissioners, deputy commissioners, relevant departments, CMIT, and the entire Suthra Punjab team involved in the operation.

Marriyum Aurangzeb informed that more than 184,000 sanitation workers participated in the Eid cleanliness operation. Around 40,000 machinery units, 12,000 additional loader rickshaws, and pickup vehicles were deployed, while over 7,000 additional machines were assigned for the timely clearance of temporary waste collection points.

Marriyum Aurangzeb highlighted that the entire Suthra Punjab operation was digitally monitored through the Suthra Punjab Digital Dashboard. More than one terabyte of data was received from 74,000 users, while over 41,000 citizens availed guidance and services through the 1139 helpline and the citizen application.

She stated that WASA, irrigation departments, drainage authorities, and other relevant institutions played an active role at district and tehsil levels. Drone surveillance was also utilized at several locations for monitoring purposes. In addition to the collection of animal waste, cleanliness of graveyards, disposal stations, trenching sites, and other public areas was also ensured.

The Senior Provincial Minister announced that Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has decided to award a special bonus of Rs. 10,000 per sanitation worker, in addition to their regular salaries, in recognition of their outstanding services.

She added that plans are being developed to establish designated slaughter sites at the Union Council level next year to make the sacrifice process more organized and environmentally sustainable.

Marriyum Aurangzeb stated that the Suthra Punjab Program is being expanded to every district, tehsil, union council, village, and neighborhood across the province. Walton and Cantonment areas will also be incorporated into the program to ensure equal access to quality sanitation services for all citizens.

She informed that under the Punjab Government’s Waste-to-Value Program, work is underway on the Waste-to-Energy Project at Mahmood Booti. Installation of incinerators is in progress, while a biogas pilot project has already been launched. The use of safety gear for sanitation workers is being strictly enforced, and penalties will be imposed for violations.

She further stated that the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has undergone comprehensive restructuring, and a modern digital system comprising Red, Yellow, and Green Zones is being introduced to effectively manage potential emergencies and disasters.

Marriyum Aurangzeb said that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif is recovering rapidly, her surgery was successful, and the prayers of the people are with her. She emphasized that the Chief Minister’s vision is to take Punjab to new heights of development through public service, environmental protection, healthcare, education, and infrastructure improvement.

She added that underground drainage and sewerage projects are currently underway in 66 cities across Punjab. Environmental awareness, cleanliness, and anti-smog green programs have also been launched in schools.

The Senior Provincial Minister concluded by saying that the sanitation workers are the true heroes who sacrificed their own Eid celebrations to make Eid enjoyable for millions of citizens. The Government of Punjab is grateful for the active cooperation of the public, which helped ensure a clean, healthy, and hygienic environment throughout the province.

Later, Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb met with officers and sanitation staff of the Suthra Punjab Authority and paid tribute to them for their outstanding services.
