US-Iran ceasefire framework faces uncertainty amid conflicting claims

Published on: May 29, 2026 6:32 PM

Reports of a possible agreement between the United States and Iran on a temporary ceasefire framework triggered fresh diplomatic speculation, although Iranian officials denied that any final deal had been completed. The proposed memorandum of understanding reportedly aims to extend the current ceasefire for 60 days while opening formal negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme and broader regional security issues.

According to US officials cited in media reports, negotiators from both countries reached a preliminary understanding, but President Donald Trump has not yet granted final approval for the arrangement. One US official stated that Trump requested additional time to review the proposal before making a final decision regarding the framework and its long-term implications for regional stability.

The reported agreement includes provisions to ensure unrestricted commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy transit routes. Under the proposal, Iran would remove all naval mines from the strategic waterway within 30 days, while the United States would gradually lift its naval blockade on Iranian ports in proportion to restored shipping activity.

Moreover, the framework reportedly contains an Iranian commitment not to pursue nuclear weapons and outlines immediate negotiations over highly enriched uranium stockpiles and enrichment activities. The United States is also expected to discuss sanctions relief, access to frozen Iranian funds, and humanitarian assistance mechanisms designed to improve economic and humanitarian conditions inside Iran.

However, Iranian sources strongly rejected claims that the memorandum had already been finalised, describing reports of a completed agreement as inaccurate and premature. Sources close to Iran’s negotiating team stated that Tehran had not formally informed Pakistani mediators about any completed text and insisted that negotiations with Washington were still ongoing without a final breakthrough.

Meanwhile, Iranian officials continued emphasizing that any future agreement must fully protect the country’s national interests and sovereignty while addressing Tehran’s stated conditions for negotiations. Iranian authorities also warned that they would respond firmly to any ceasefire violations, highlighting the fragile nature of the truce and the continuing mistrust surrounding diplomatic efforts between Tehran and Washington.
