US denies reports of aircraft downed near Bushehr

Published on: May 29, 2026 2:14 PM

The United States military has rejected Iranian media reports claiming that a US aircraft was shot down near Iran’s Bushehr province amid continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran. The denial came shortly after Iranian state television broadcast reports alleging that Iranian air defence systems had successfully targeted an American aircraft near the Jam governorate in southern Iran.

Iranian state television, citing Bushehr Governor Masoud Tangestani, reported early Friday that a US aircraft had been destroyed in the region following military action by Iranian forces. Additional reports from Iranian state media also claimed that an American A-10 aircraft was hit by Iranian air defences, further escalating speculation surrounding military activity near Iran’s southern coastline and strategic Gulf areas.

However, the US Central Command strongly denied the reports and stated that no American aircraft had been shot down or lost during operations in the region. In a statement posted on X, the command said that all US air assets were fully accounted for and dismissed the Iranian claims as inaccurate amid heightened tensions and conflicting narratives from both sides.

The incident emerged at a time when relations between the United States and Iran remain extremely tense despite ongoing diplomatic efforts linked to ceasefire discussions and nuclear negotiations. Military exchanges, allegations of truce violations and regional security concerns have continued raising fears of broader instability across the Middle East, particularly around strategically important Gulf waterways and military zones.

Meanwhile, the conflicting statements from Tehran and Washington highlighted the deep mistrust between both countries as each side continued presenting different versions of recent military developments. Analysts believe such incidents increase uncertainty in the region and complicate diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions, restoring confidence and preventing further escalation between Iranian and American forces operating near critical strategic locations.

Furthermore, Bushehr province remains a highly sensitive area because of its strategic coastal position and the presence of major energy and military facilities within southern Iran. Any reported military confrontation near the region immediately attracts international attention due to concerns over regional security, global oil markets and the potential impact on navigation routes and broader Middle East stability.
