Kohli-Head spat dominates IPL showdown

Published on: May 23, 2026 9:07 PM

Virat Kohli refused to shake hands with Travis Head after a heated IPL clash on Friday. The confrontation followed Sunrisers Hyderabad’s commanding 55-run victory over Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The incident grabbed attention because both teams already secured playoff qualification.

Tempers rose during Bengaluru’s difficult chase of 256 runs against Hyderabad. Kohli and Head exchanged sharp words after an intense on-field discussion. Moreover, Kohli gestured towards Head, challenging the Australian batter to bowl during the tense moment. Kohli also mocked Hyderabad’s “impact player” substitution strategy with animated hand signals. The exchange quickly became a major talking point across the cricketing world.

Shortly after the confrontation, Kohli lost his wicket for 15 runs from 11 deliveries. His dismissal weakened Bengaluru’s chase against Hyderabad’s strong bowling attack. Later, Head bowled an over and dismissed Bengaluru captain Rajat Patidar. Consequently, Hyderabad tightened control and secured an emphatic victory before the playoffs begin next week.

After the match, tensions remained visible during the customary handshake line. Head extended his hand towards Kohli while players exchanged greetings on the field. However, Kohli walked past without acknowledging the Australian opener. The moment immediately sparked debate among fans and commentators on social media platforms. Meanwhile, Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins praised his bowlers for containing Bengaluru’s batting lineup.

Despite the defeat, Bengaluru stayed top of the IPL standings because of a superior net run rate. Hyderabad moved level on points with Bengaluru after Friday’s important win. Furthermore, both sides confirmed playoff qualification ahead of the knockout stage starting Wednesday. The latest clash added extra intensity to an already competitive IPL season.
