Trump warns Iran to accept peace agreement quickly

Published on: May 18, 2026 9:16 AM

US President Donald Trump has issued a fresh warning to Iran, urging Tehran to move swiftly towards a peace agreement as tensions between the two countries remain high following months of conflict.

In a statement posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump said Iran needed to act quickly or face severe consequences. “For Iran, the clock is ticking, and they better get moving, fast, or there won’t be anything left of them,” he wrote.

The warning comes as Washington and Tehran remain locked in a prolonged crisis that began after US and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February, triggering regional instability and disruption to global energy markets.

The conflict has led to an effective blockade of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key route for nearly 20 per cent of global oil shipments. The disruption has pushed oil prices higher and increased concerns over global supply chains.

Negotiations between the US and Iran have struggled to gain momentum despite a truce announced in April. Iranian media reported on Sunday that Washington had failed to offer meaningful concessions in its latest proposals, contributing to a continued deadlock.

According to reports, the latest US proposal includes demands related to Iran’s nuclear programme, including limits on operational nuclear sites and the transfer of enriched uranium stockpiles.

Iranian outlets criticised the proposals, arguing that the United States was seeking major concessions without offering sufficient relief, including the release of frozen Iranian assets or compensation for war-related damages.

The conflict has also spilled into neighbouring countries, with renewed violence involving Hezbollah and Israel despite an extended ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon.

Pakistan has remained engaged in diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions, with senior officials continuing talks in Tehran.

Trump also recently discussed Iran with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit to Beijing, though no major breakthrough was announced. Regional uncertainty continues as diplomatic efforts face growing pressure to deliver a lasting resolution.
