Pakistan invites Korea for hockey series return

Pakistan Likely to Host South Korea for Four-Match Hockey Series

International hockey could return to Pakistan after a long gap as the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has invited South Korea for a four-match Test series, officials said.

PHF President Mueenuddin Wani confirmed the development while speaking on a local sports programme, saying that discussions between both sides are still in the early stages. He added that the federation hopes to host the series in the last week of July.

According to officials, the proposed series is part of efforts to revive international hockey in Pakistan and strengthen the national team’s preparation ahead of major global events. The final decision regarding venues has not yet been made, with options under consideration to hold matches either in a single city or across multiple cities.

Wani expressed optimism that if the series is finalised, it would mark the beginning of a new phase for international hockey in Pakistan, bringing high-level competition back to local grounds after years of absence.

The Pakistan team is also preparing for the Hockey World Cup scheduled from August 15 to 30. The proposed home series against South Korea is expected to serve as crucial preparation before the tournament.

Pakistan currently holds 12th position in the international hockey rankings, while South Korea is ranked 20th. Although South Korea has not qualified for the upcoming World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands, the proposed series is still seen as valuable for competitive exposure and team development.

Officials say negotiations are ongoing, and both hockey boards are working towards finalising the tour schedule and logistics.

Pakistan has recently shown improvement in international hockey performance, including qualification for major events after an extended gap, and the revival of home series is being viewed as an important step towards restoring the sport domestically.

If the series goes ahead, it would mark one of the most significant international hockey events hosted by Pakistan in recent years, potentially boosting fan engagement and strengthening ties with visiting teams.
