Duchess Sophie leads key child safety summit in Denmark

Published on: May 14, 2026 9:00 PM

Duchess Sophie took on an important royal role this week as King Charles III continued assigning senior family members to major international engagements. Buckingham Palace released official photographs and details after Sophie attended a high-level summit in Copenhagen focused on child safety in the digital age.

The Duchess of Edinburgh travelled to Denmark on May 14 to participate in discussions about protecting children from the growing risks linked to artificial intelligence and online platforms. The conference brought together policymakers, experts and organisations working to improve digital safety standards and strengthen safeguards against online abuse targeting young people.

According to the Palace, Sophie attended the summit in her role as patron of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. During the event, she met with leading stakeholders to review proposals and initiatives aimed at protecting children from AI-related dangers, particularly risks connected to child sexual exploitation and harmful online activity.

The summit was hosted at Christiansborg Palace and officially opened by King Frederik X. Palace officials said the gathering focused on practical measures to improve online protections for children as concerns continue growing globally over the misuse of artificial intelligence technologies and digital platforms.

Meanwhile, Duchess Sophie has increasingly represented the royal family at major events while Catherine, Princess of Wales remains abroad for her first overseas visit since completing cancer treatment. Kate is currently undertaking engagements in Italy, prompting Sophie to carry out several key duties on behalf of the monarchy in recent weeks.

Royal observers noted that Sophie’s expanding public role reflects the royal family’s continued focus on maintaining international engagement and supporting social causes linked to child welfare and digital safety. Her appearance at the Denmark summit also highlighted growing international cooperation on protecting children from emerging technological threats in the AI era.
