Arsenal edge West Ham to stay on course for title

Published on: May 11, 2026 10:29 AM

Arsenal survive VAR drama to move closer to title with dramatic win at West Ham | The Peninsula Qatar

Arsenal moved a step closer to ending their long Premier League title drought after Leandro Trossard’s late winner secured a tense 1-0 victory over West Ham United on Sunday.

The decisive moment came in the 83rd minute at London Stadium when Trossard calmly finished a low pass from captain Martin Odegaard, handing Arsenal a crucial three points in one of their toughest remaining fixtures of the season.

The visitors were forced to work hard for the win, with West Ham creating several dangerous moments throughout the match. Arsenal’s defence was tested repeatedly, and the title contenders survived a major scare in stoppage time when West Ham substitute Callum Wilson appeared to score an equaliser.

However, after a lengthy VAR review, the goal was ruled out due to a foul in the build-up, allowing Arsenal to preserve their narrow lead and celebrate an important victory.

The result restores Arsenal’s five-point advantage at the top of the Premier League table with 79 points from 36 matches. Defending champions Manchester City remain in second place on 74 points, although Pep Guardiola’s side still have a game in hand.

Arsenal now require victories in their final two matches — against Burnley at home and Crystal Palace away — to maximise their chances of securing a first league title since 2004.

For West Ham, the defeat significantly worsened their relegation concerns. The London club remains locked in a tense battle for survival and could slip four points behind safety if results elsewhere go against them.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa missed an opportunity to strengthen their push for Champions League qualification after being held to a 2-2 draw by already-relegated Burnley.

Manchester City kept pressure on Arsenal with a convincing 3-0 win over Brentford on Saturday, courtesy of goals from Jeremy Doku, Erling Haaland and Omar Marmoush.

With just weeks remaining in the campaign, the Premier League title race remains finely balanced, with Arsenal maintaining control but facing continued pressure from a relentless Manchester City side.
