Mother’s Day celebrated worldwide with tributes to mothers’ sacrifice, strength

Published on: May 11, 2026 7:08 AM

The unparalleled status of mothers was once again highlighted across the world as International Mother’s Day was celebrated on Sunday, May 10, including in Pakistan, with people paying tribute to mothers for their unconditional love, sacrifices and lifelong devotion to their children.

Islam places extraordinary respect on mothers, and Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) repeatedly highlighted their importance and dignity in society. Various Hadiths underline the elevated position of mothers and the duty of children to honour and care for them with love and respect. A mother’s love is widely regarded as one of the purest and most selfless forms of affection. From nurturing children through life’s challenges to providing unwavering emotional support, mothers remain a source of strength, comfort and guidance for their families.

The purpose of celebrating Mother’s Day is to recognise the importance of this sacred relationship and acknowledge the countless sacrifices mothers make throughout their lives. Across Pakistan and many other countries, the occasion is observed on the second Sunday of May each year. Historically, Mother’s Day was first officially celebrated in the United States in 1911 before gradually gaining worldwide recognition. Today, different countries mark the occasion on varying dates according to their traditions and customs.

Speaking to the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP), 62-year-old housewife Surraya Bibi said that while every day should be devoted to honouring mothers, Mother’s Day serves as a special opportunity to recognise their greatness and sacrifices. “Every mother is admirable, but some mothers face hardships with remarkable courage. Alongside caring for the household and ensuring the best upbringing of their children, many also work tirelessly to support their families,” she said.

She added that despite numerous challenges, mothers always prioritise the well-being and future of their children. “A mother’s heart always beats for her children. Whether at home or at work, her foremost concern is to provide them with the best possible life and future,” she remarked.

Senator Sehar Kamran also paid tribute to mothers while speaking to APP, saying that a mother’s concern and love for her children never ends. “Even if every relationship in the world turns away from a person, a mother continues to care for her children until her last breath,” she said. She described motherhood as the most selfless human relationship and said that Allah Almighty had bestowed a highly exalted status upon mothers. She added that mothers are the foundation of strong families and a compassionate society, while Mother’s Day serves as a reminder of their extraordinary love and lifelong sacrifices.
