Blast at fireworks factory in China's Hunan kills 21, Xi calls for probe, state media says | Arab News PK

A powerful explosion at a fireworks manufacturing factory in China Hunan province has killed at least 21 people and injured 61 others, according to state media reports, prompting a nationwide safety review and urgent government response.

The blast occurred on Monday afternoon in Liuyang, a city under Changsha administration known as a major hub for fireworks production. The explosion reportedly took place around 4:40 pm local time at the Huasheng Fireworks Manufacturing and Display Company.

The fireworks plant explosion on Monday in central China’s Hunan Province has left 21 people dead and 61 others injured, authorities said Tuesday.

Television footage and social media videos showed thick plumes of smoke rising into the sky from the industrial site, along with extensive structural damage and debris scattered across the facility. Authorities confirmed that rescue operations were immediately launched following the incident.

Nearly 500 emergency personnel, supported by rescue robots, were deployed to the scene. Officials said teams were conducting coordinated search operations across the affected area to locate survivors and prevent further hazards.

State media reported that two black powder storage warehouses inside the factory compound posed additional safety risks, complicating rescue efforts. Authorities evacuated nearby residents and established a 1-kilometre emergency zone and a 3-kilometre controlled perimeter.

The company’s site was sealed off as investigations began. Local reports said the person in charge of the factory had been detained, and officials are working to determine the exact cause of the explosion.

Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered a swift investigation and called for strict accountability, according to state broadcaster CCTV. He also urged stronger risk inspections and improved safety measures across high-risk industries.

Fireworks production is a significant industry in China, which accounts for a major share of global exports. However, industrial accidents involving explosive materials have periodically raised concerns about safety standards and enforcement.

Xi has recently emphasized improving disaster response and workplace safety following several major accidents across the country. The incident has once again highlighted risks in hazardous manufacturing sectors and is expected to lead to stricter regulatory oversight in fireworks production facilities nationwide.
