Israeli military issues evacuation warnings in southern Lebanon

Published on: May 4, 2026 3:45 PM

Israeli warnings of immediate evacuation of four towns in southern Lebanon

The Israeli military has issued urgent evacuation warnings to residents of four towns in southern Lebanon amid renewed military escalation along the border region. Residents in Qana, Dabaal, Qaqaiyat al-Jisr, and Srifa were instructed to leave their homes immediately and move at least 1,000 metres away due to anticipated military operations.

The warnings came as Israeli forces reportedly carried out overnight airstrikes and artillery shelling across several southern Lebanese areas. Local reports indicated strikes in Khiam and Qantara, alongside artillery fire targeting areas near Safad al-Batikh, Yater, Majdal Selm, and al-Shaitiya.

Southern Lebanon has witnessed intensified hostilities over the past two days, with military activity reaching levels not seen since before the April ceasefire. The renewed clashes have raised concerns about the durability of the fragile truce announced last month.

Observers say the south remains the most volatile front, with ceasefire understandings appearing less effective in the region compared with other parts of Lebanon. The latest escalation has fuelled fears of broader instability as exchanges of fire continue between Israeli forces and Hezbollah.

Despite earlier diplomatic efforts and a ceasefire extension reportedly supported by US President Donald Trump, violence in southern Lebanon has persisted. Analysts suggest the ongoing operations highlight the limitations of recent diplomatic arrangements in preventing renewed confrontation.

Reports indicate hundreds of Israeli airstrikes have been recorded in recent days, further worsening security conditions and prompting displacement concerns among civilians.

The situation remains fluid, with no clear indication of de-escalation. Regional observers warn that continued military exchanges could undermine broader ceasefire efforts and increase the risk of a wider conflict. Residents in affected areas have been urged to follow safety instructions as tensions remain high.
