In a statement shared on social media, Trump said the initiative, named “Project Freedom,” would begin on Monday morning in the Middle East. He stated that the operation is intended to assist “neutral and innocent” countries whose ships have been affected by disruptions in the strategically important waterway.

According to Trump, the US will help guide vessels through restricted routes so they can resume normal trade operations. He described the effort as a humanitarian initiative aimed at easing the impact of regional instability on global shipping.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors, with nearly one-fifth of global oil and natural gas trade passing through the narrow channel. Ongoing tensions between Iran, the United States, and Israel have significantly disrupted maritime traffic in the area.

Reports indicate that hundreds of vessels and thousands of crew members have faced delays, supply shortages, and security risks since the conflict began earlier this year. Several incidents involving drones, missiles, and small craft attacks have also been reported near the strait.

Earlier, a cargo vessel near the Strait of Hormuz reportedly came under attack by multiple small boats, according to maritime monitoring agencies. All crew members were reported safe.

Iran has maintained a firm stance regarding control over the waterway and has warned against foreign interference. Iranian officials recently stated that any US involvement in Strait of Hormuz operations could be viewed as a breach of the existing ceasefire arrangement.

Despite the tensions, a fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran has largely held in recent weeks, although broader negotiations remain stalled.

Analysts say the US initiative could ease immediate shipping disruptions but also carries the risk of further escalating regional tensions if not carefully coordinated.

Global markets continue to closely monitor developments in the Strait of Hormuz due to its critical role in international energy supply chains.
