Zardari reaffirms press freedom amid global media challenges

Published on: May 3, 2026 12:20 PM

Asif Ali Zardari reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong commitment to press freedom, describing it as both a constitutional right and a vital pillar of democracy. In his message marking World Press Freedom Day, he extended greetings to journalists, editors, and media professionals worldwide while emphasising the importance of truthful reporting in shaping peaceful societies.

He stressed that peace cannot exist without truth, and truth depends on individuals who have the courage to investigate, verify, and present facts responsibly. However, he noted that the modern media landscape faces growing challenges, including misinformation, disinformation, and emerging risks linked to artificial intelligence technologies that can manipulate public perception.

Moreover, Zardari warned that powerful global media networks and technology platforms often influence narratives through algorithm-driven content, sometimes promoting divisive ideologies such as xenophobia, racism, and populism. He argued that such trends threaten independent journalism, as non-state actors, including large tech companies, increasingly shape public opinion and information flows.

Referring to legal protections, he highlighted that Constitution of Pakistan guarantees freedom of expression under Article 19, while Article 19-A ensures citizens’ right to access information. He explained that a free, diverse, and independent media strengthens democratic systems by promoting accountability, transparency, and informed public debate.

At the same time, he urged media professionals to uphold ethical standards, stressing that accuracy should not be sacrificed for speed and impartiality must remain central to reporting. He also cautioned against coordinated campaigns spreading false information about Pakistan, noting that such efforts aim to weaken unity and create internal divisions.

Recalling national resilience during recent tensions, he said the country’s media played a crucial role by countering misinformation with facts and clarity. He called on authorities to ensure a safe working environment for journalists and encouraged citizens to support credible journalism, honouring those who sacrificed their lives in pursuit of truth.
