President Asif Ali Zardari attended the commissioning ceremony as the chief guest, while Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf was also present on the occasion.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the induction of the Hangor-class submarine represents a significant step forward in strengthening Pakistan’s maritime defence and enhancing its operational readiness in the region.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Zardari said the commissioning of the submarine reflects Pakistan’s continued progress in naval technology and its commitment to safeguarding sovereignty, protecting maritime interests, and securing key economic corridors.
He added that Pakistan possesses the full capability to defend its territorial waters and ensure the security of important sea routes that are vital for global and regional trade.
Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf highlighted the strategic importance of uninterrupted maritime routes, stating that any disruption in key sea lanes poses a serious risk to global trade and energy supply chains.
He said the new submarines would play a crucial role in deterring aggression and ensuring the security of important shipping routes in the Arabian Sea.
Admiral Ashraf also referred to Pakistan Navy’s historical legacy, noting that the original PNS Hangor achieved a landmark victory during the 1971 conflict, becoming the first submarine after World War II to sink an enemy warship.

The new Hangor-class submarines are equipped with advanced air-independent propulsion systems, modern sonar technology, stealth features, and enhanced underwater endurance capabilities, making them highly effective for prolonged maritime operations.
Officials described the commissioning as a symbol of deep-rooted Pakistan-China defence cooperation and longstanding strategic partnership.
