Anne Hathaway clarifies body diversity debate around Devil Wears Prada sequel

Published on: April 29, 2026 4:13 PM

Anne Hathaway has addressed growing online debate surrounding body diversity in the upcoming sequel to The Devil Wears Prada. The discussion gained momentum after comments from Meryl Streep suggested Hathaway encouraged producers to include more size-inclusive models in a key fashion runway scene. However, social media users quickly misinterpreted the remark and speculated that several models had been removed from the production because of the decision.

During a television appearance on Good Morning America, Hathaway clarified that the situation had been misunderstood and insisted that no models lost their jobs during filming. Instead, she explained that the production team expanded the casting to include a wider variety of body types, ultimately creating additional opportunities for more models to appear in the scene. According to the actress, the intention was simply to reflect a broader and more realistic representation of beauty.

Hathaway said the idea emerged naturally while filming when she noticed that most of the models selected for the sequence reflected traditional runway standards. She suggested that the scene could become more visually engaging and relatable if audiences saw a broader range of body shapes represented. By presenting different body types together on screen, the filmmakers hoped to highlight the diversity that already exists in real-world fashion and celebrate multiple definitions of beauty.

The actress also praised the production team for responding quickly to the suggestion and embracing the concept almost immediately. Hathaway revealed that producers supported the idea and worked rapidly to bring additional models into the scene within a short period of time. As a result, the updated casting approach expanded the scope of the sequence while reinforcing the film’s evolving perspective on fashion and representation.

Meanwhile, fans have also shown growing curiosity about the film’s soundtrack after Hathaway revealed that Lady Gaga contributed an original song to the project. She described the track as a beautiful and powerful addition to the movie, hinting that the music will accompany the visually diverse runway sequence. The combination of fashion, music and inclusive casting has already generated significant anticipation for the sequel among longtime followers of the franchise.

As excitement around the film continues to build, Hathaway said she hopes audiences will appreciate the message behind the expanded representation on screen. By presenting models with different body types together in a prominent scene, the filmmakers aim to reflect the evolving values of the fashion industry and modern audiences. The actress added that celebrating diversity in appearance can help make storytelling more inclusive while allowing viewers to feel better represented in mainstream entertainment.
