Shakira concert tragedy in Brazil as crew member dies

Published on: April 29, 2026 10:21 PM

A tragic incident has cast a dark shadow over Shakira’s upcoming free concert in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, after a crew member died during stage setup operations. The show, part of the “Todo Mundo No Rio” event scheduled for May 2, faced emotional disruption following the fatal workplace accident. Organisers confirmed the incident in an official statement shared on social media, expressing sorrow over the sudden loss. Despite the tragedy, preparations for the concert continue at the venue for now.

According to organisers, the accident occurred on Sunday, April 26, while workers were assembling large stage structures for the highly anticipated music event. The crew member reportedly suffered severe injuries while operating a lifting system used in stage construction activities. Emergency responders were immediately called to the scene after the incident was reported by fellow workers on site. However, the situation quickly turned critical due to the severity of the injuries sustained.

Authorities later confirmed that the worker suffered crushing injuries to his lower limbs during the equipment-related accident at the construction site. He was removed from the machinery by colleagues before emergency teams arrived and transported to Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital. Medical staff attempted treatment upon arrival, but he was later pronounced dead due to the extent of his injuries. Officials have launched procedures to review safety conditions at the event setup area.

Following the incident, organisers expressed condolences and stated that they are cooperating with local authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident. They also confirmed that the safety of all remaining staff has become the top priority as preparations continue. The event team emphasized that proper protocols are being reviewed to ensure such incidents do not occur again. Meanwhile, discussions are ongoing regarding safety inspections and operational adjustments at the venue.

Despite the tragedy, the concert is still scheduled to take place on Rio’s iconic Copacabana Beach as a free public event attracting large crowds. Just days before the incident, Shakira had shared her excitement on social media, mentioning surprises for fans including guest artists and new performances. Her posts highlighted enthusiasm for the upcoming show and preparations underway for a major live experience. However, the recent accident has now added uncertainty and emotional weight to the event atmosphere.

Overall, the incident has raised serious concerns about safety measures during large-scale concert preparations involving complex stage construction equipment. Authorities are expected to carry out a detailed investigation into working conditions and equipment handling procedures at the site. Meanwhile, organisers continue to assess whether additional safety measures or changes are required before the event proceeds. The music community and fans have also expressed condolences over the tragic loss of the crew member.
