Shaan Shahid questions industry ‘comfort zones’

Published on: April 25, 2026 4:30 PM

Shaan Shahid believes Humayun Saeed and Fahad Mustafa want to stay in their 'comfort zones'

Veteran actor Shaan Shahid has sparked discussion within Pakistan’s entertainment industry after suggesting that fellow stars Humayun Saeed and Fahad Mustafa prefer to remain in their “comfort zones” rather than challenge their craft.

Speaking on a television show, Shahid said both actors are highly capable but tend to operate within familiar creative boundaries. His remarks came during a broader conversation about the direction of Pakistani cinema and the challenges facing the industry.

Shahid argued that while film budgets in Pakistan have increased, creative thinking has not evolved at the same pace. He emphasised that filmmaking should focus on storytelling and artistic depth rather than box office numbers. Citing his recent film, he said smaller-budget productions can still achieve commercial success if backed by strong ideas.

The actor also expressed a preference for Punjabi cinema, noting that it continues to resonate with audiences despite limited financial resources. He suggested that passion and originality, rather than large budgets, are key to sustaining audience interest.

Addressing industry dynamics, Shahid highlighted divisions between different regions, particularly Karachi and Lahore, which he believes hinder collaboration and growth. He criticised what he described as a “territorial mindset” among some stakeholders, calling for greater openness and unity within the industry.

Shahid further raised concerns about the growing influence of social media metrics, arguing that success is increasingly measured by popularity rather than talent. He warned that this trend risks lowering content quality and discouraging meaningful creative work.

While offering his personal views, Shahid acknowledged that others may choose different paths in their careers. His comments have added to ongoing debates about the future direction of Pakistan’s film industry and the balance between commercial success and artistic integrity.
