Commuters are finally seeing some relief as bus fares from Lahore to major cities have decreased following a cut in diesel prices. However, the goods transport sector says it is still struggling despite the reduction.
The federal government recently reduced the price of diesel by Rs32 per litre, triggering a decrease in passenger transport fares. Following the announcement, bus operators adjusted ticket prices for several key routes from Lahore, passing on the benefit to travelers.
The president of the Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance, Malik Shahzad Awan, welcomed the government’s decision and thanked the prime minister for reducing diesel prices. He described the move as a positive step, noting that diesel costs had previously surged to as high as Rs263 per litre before recent cuts.
Despite the reduction in fuel prices, goods transport fares have not been lowered for now. Awan stated that no further reduction will be made at this stage, adding that fares will be reviewed later depending on market conditions.
The goods transport sector continues to face serious challenges due to the ongoing war situation, which has significantly impacted trade activity. According to transporters, import and export operations are almost at a standstill, leaving thousands of vehicles parked due to lack of business.
Transporters say they are currently operating vehicles at a loss, making it difficult to pass on the benefit of lower diesel prices.
The industry remains under pressure, and stakeholders are closely monitoring the situation before making any further adjustments to freight rates. While passengers have benefited from reduced fares, the broader transport sector continues to grapple with economic uncertainty.
