Gilani pushes digital football revolution as Pakistan joins FIFAe Nations League

Published on: April 15, 2026 8:20 PM

LAHORE: The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) has taken a landmark step in modernising the country’s football landscape by formally entering the global esports arena, announcing the formation of Pakistan’s first-ever national FIFAe team.

The four-member squad will represent Pakistan in the prestigious FIFAe Nations League, marking the country’s debut in international competitive football gaming under FIFA’s banner. This initiative reflects a broader strategic vision led by PFF President Mohsen Gilani to expand football beyond traditional boundaries and engage the country’s rapidly growing digital youth population.

Speaking on the development, President Mohsen Gilani emphasised that promoting FIFAe gaming culture is central to the federation’s vision. He highlighted the importance of motivating young players and creating opportunities for them to excel in emerging fields.

“Pakistan has always had the talent. What we are doing now is providing that talent with a platform to shine and represent the country with pride,” Gilani said. He further noted that esports represents a vital avenue where millions of young Pakistanis are already active, making it essential for institutions to meet them in that space.

Gilani also described the football industry as an emerging and evolving sector in Pakistan, stressing that embracing esports is a natural extension of efforts to strengthen the overall football ecosystem.

PFF officials reiterated their commitment to fulfilling the responsibilities entrusted to them, particularly in nurturing young talent. The federation plans to ensure that aspiring players have access to qualified coaches and structured development pathways, both in traditional football and esports.

PFF Esports Manager Shahzeb Raza provided insight into the team selection process, revealing that a nationwide talent hunt was conducted in collaboration with gaming partners. A total of 178 participants competed in the trials, from which the top four players were selected to form the national squad.

“We currently have 178 participants in our system, and after a competitive process, four players have been finalized for the national team,” said Raza. He added that the matches are scheduled to commence at 3 PM, marking the beginning of Pakistan’s journey in FIFAe competitions.

Raza further outlined the federation’s long-term roadmap, stating that the FIFAe Nations League is only the first step. The PFF plans to conduct regular trials and expand esports competitions across schools, colleges, and universities nationwide to identify and develop future talent.

Meanwhile, PFF Vice President Hafiz Zaka underscored the global popularity of esports and its growing relevance among youth. He noted that such events are highly beneficial, offering young individuals constructive engagement, skill development, and international exposure. “Esports is immensely popular worldwide, and initiatives like these provide valuable opportunities for our youth,” Zaka said.
