Punjab CM launches first govt-run transport service for carrying the dead

Published on: April 14, 2026 9:38 AM

Punjab Chief Minister(CM) Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Monday launched Pakistan’s first government-run “Deceased Transportation Service,” aimed at ensuring free and dignified transport of bodies from government hospitals to their homes.

The CM handed over keys of service vehicles to authorities in Lahore, Rawalpindi and Multan, and inspected the fleet on the occasion.

She also met Rescue personnel and appreciated their services, directing them to perform their duties with dedication and a spirit of public service.

Under the first phase, the service will operate in Lahore, Rawalpindi and Multan, providing free transportation of deceased persons from government hospitals to their residences.

Officials said the service would be expanded to all tehsils of Punjab by June, with dedicated vehicles to be deployed at the tehsil level.

Speaking on the occasion, CM Maryam Nawaz said that it was unfortunate that private transporters often overcharge bereaved families during moments of grief.

She said the government would ensure dignity and support for citizens, adding that the state stands with people in their difficult times.

She also directed that Rescue staff must not accept any payment under any circumstances.

Provincial Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique termed the initiative a commendable step, noting that it had initially been launched in major cities and would be extended further with private ambulances to be arranged in the second phase.

According to a briefing, citizens can access the service by dialing 1122.

Dedicated desks will be set up in government hospitals, while trained uniformed drivers will provide round-the-clock service.

Rescue 1122 Director General(DG), Dr. Rizwan Naseer said the system would also facilitate transfer of bodies to morgues where required and would be monitored through a smart dispatch and management system.
