The United Nations (UN) has strongly condemned what it described as “unrelenting” killings of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, warning that civilians continue to face daily danger despite a fragile ceasefire.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said at least 32 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces in April alone, according to figures cited from Gaza’s health ministry. He said the pattern of violence reflects “continuing disregard for Palestinian lives” and a lack of accountability.
Türk stated that Palestinians are being killed in a wide range of locations, including homes, shelters for displaced families, streets, vehicles, and even medical and educational facilities. He added that movement within Gaza has become “life-threatening,” with incidents occurring almost daily.
He also highlighted the deaths of humanitarian workers and journalists, including a contractor for the World Health Organization and an Al Jazeera reporter, warning that the targeting of media and aid personnel is making it increasingly difficult to document and respond to the crisis.
According to the UN, more than 700 Palestinians have been killed and over 2,000 injured in the past six months despite the ceasefire agreement, which began on October 10. Türk said this raises serious questions about the effectiveness of the truce.
He further pointed to restrictions on humanitarian aid and the destruction of civilian infrastructure as major factors worsening the humanitarian situation in Gaza. The UN official also mentioned reports of violence involving armed groups operating in the territory.
Calling for urgent international action, Türk urged states to move beyond statements and take concrete steps to ensure accountability and protect civilians. He said Palestinians currently have “no safe option” for survival under the ongoing conditions.

The conflict traces back to the October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel, which killed 1,221 people, followed by Israel’s military offensive that has reportedly killed tens of thousands in Gaza, according to local health authorities.
