Cardiac surgery programme key step towards healthy Punjab: minister

Published on: April 11, 2026 7:39 AM

Punjab Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique has said that the cardiac surgery programme is a significant initiative of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif aimed at ensuring a healthy Punjab, adding that every permanent resident of the province is being provided free medical treatment up to Rs 1 million annually.

According to a press release issued here on Friday, the minister expressed these views during his visit to the Sahiwal Institute of Cardiology, where he reviewed medical facilities in detail.

During the visit, Khawaja Salman Rafique inspected the Cath Lab, Reporting Area, Emergency Ward, and CCU Ward. He also met patients undergoing treatment in the CCU and inquired about the healthcare services being provided. The minister received a briefing from the concerned officials regarding angiography equipment and pharmacy arrangements.

He stated that the establishment of the Sahiwal Institute of Cardiology has brought great relief to heart patients in the region, ensuring access to modern treatment facilities closer to their homes.

Secretary Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education Azmat Mahmood said that the shortage of doctors and staff at the institute is being addressed on a priority basis, adding that efforts are underway to further improve healthcare services.

Chairman Punjab Chief Minister’s Advisory Committee for Cardiology Dr. Farqad Alamgir noted that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif is committed to providing the best possible medical facilities to heart patients, and cardiac institutes across Punjab are striving to deliver quality healthcare.

Commissioner Sahiwal Division Dr. Asif Tufail, Principal Sahiwal Medical College Prof. Dr. Muhammad Akhtar, and Member Board Sheikh Basharat Nadeem were also present on the occasion.
